About Our Insulin-Like Growth Factor I (IGF-I)

Overview

The insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) is a hormone that is involved in the normal development of bones and tissues in the body. This test measures the blood content of IGF-1. IGF-1 is produced by the liver, skeletal muscles, and other body tissues from the stimulation of growth hormone. IGF-1 is an important regulator of the actions of growth hormone (GH) in the processes of bone growth, the development of lean muscles, and other tissues. It is also an important hormone in the regulation of sugar and fat metabolism, and thus can also be a factor to look at for suspected metabolic syndrome. Deficiency can be caused by issues with the pituitary gland, pituitary tumors, and growth hormone insensitivity. Excess IGF-1 can cause issues with skeletal growth that are characterized by two rare disorders: acromegaly and gigantism. These are mainly spurred by a benign tumor in the pituitary causing the gland to release too much growth hormone.
